Attorney Profile
If you have ever seen Attorney Gray in action in the courtroom, you already
know that he fights for his clients interests through any situation.

Attorney Gray was born in Washington, N.C. and attended the public schools
there until he left to attend the North Carolina Central University in Durham,
N.C. (NCCU), where he hit the ground running after being elected president
of the freshman class.  Gray did not stop there, but went on to become
president of the NCCU Chapter of the Golden Key International Honor
Society and eventually president of the student body.

It was at North Carolina Central University where he honed his public
speaking skills and won the University Public Speaking Competition during
the Black History Month celebration for his published musings on the African
American experience entitled, "The Perils of Historic Amnesia."  Prior to
competitive speaking, Gray was first introduced to the craft as a 5th grader
when he learned and recited all of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream"
speech.  It was then that he decided he'd be a people's lawyer one day.

While at NCCU, Gray worked in President Clinton's administration as a
White House Intern and later as a lawyer in President Bush's administration
on homeland issues such as Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security,
National Security, the Patient's Bill of Rights, Housing & Urban Development
and education reform.

After finishing undergraduate school at NCCU
magna cum laude, Gray
landed his first professional job as Southeast Raleigh High School's first
African American male English teacher. While there, he taught British
literature to 12th grade honor students, African American literature to 9th
through 12th grade students as an elective, and served as the Assistant
Athletic Director and advisor for the honor society.

Clifton Gray III has always been committed to the public and to individual
rights and freedoms.  In law school, he wrote as
Editor-in-Chief of the North
Carolina Central Law Journal
. In addition, he was a pupil of the Susie M.
Sharp Inn of Court and the recipient of the Justice Robert Glass Dean's
Award.  In his final year at NCCU law, Gray was a featured lecturer in a series
designed to train first year law students in effectively writing for legal
examinations.   After graduating law school
cum laude on an academic
scholarship, Gray continued his education and honed his trial advocacy
skills as a Master of Laws student in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution
Program at The George Washington University Law Center while
simultaneously practicing law in our nation's capital.

In 2005, Gray left the practice of law in Washington D.C. to help form the
offices of Gray Sutton, PLLC, Attorneys & Counselors at Law, where he was a
named and founding partner along with Attorney Watsi Sutton.  That same
year he received the Reverend G.R. Lovick Scholarship Fund Service Award
for his commitment to serving the community.  Thereafter, he began The Law
Offices of Clifton J. Gray, III as a solo practitioner until two other lawyers,
Attorneys Missy Phelps and Ghita Harris began practicing law with the firm
as associates.  In 2006, he opened a satellite office in Raleigh, N.C.

Today, Gray is once again a solo-practitioner and enjoys splitting his time
between his law offices in Greenville at 209-A South Evans Street and in
Raleigh.

As an orator, motivational speaker, radio talk show host and natural talent,
Gray has addressed, captivated and moved audiences for more than twenty
years, much the same way he gains the attention of judges and juries today
as the fighting, savvy, and aggressive people's trial lawyer with a loud,
persuasive and unmistakable voice.

Gray streamlines his legal practice primarily to criminal and traffic defense,
family law, and personal injury cases.  When asked about his zeal and sheer
passion in his trial advocacy and representing his clients' interests, Gray
reminds us of Dr. King's 1963 "Letter from a Birmingham Jail": "An injustice
anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," so Gray responds to every act of
injustice as if it happened to him.

In October 2008,
Gray was recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing
dedication, leadership and excellence in criminal law.  In 2009, Gray was
appointed by the Beaufort County Commissioners to serve as a member of
the Board of Trustees for the Beaufort Regional Health System. In 2010, the
Chair appointed him as chair of Quality Improvement Committee, one of two
committees on the board.  Gray is also an active member of the Board of
Directors for the Beaufort County Boys & Girls Club and is a member of the
North Carolina Bar Association,  American Bar Association, the North
Carolina Advocates for Justice, the Capital City Lawyers Association, the
Wake County Bar Association, The Richard Powell Society, and the Beaufort
County Bar.  He is admitted to practice law in every court in the state of North
Carolina and before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of
North Carolina.
From its offices in Greenville and Raleigh, North Carolina, The Law Offices of Clifton J. Gray, III serves  most of Eastern
